Central University of Technology (CUT)
The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) is a public university of technology located in South Africa, with campuses in Bloemfontein and Welkom. Established in 1981 as “Technikon Free State,” it was later elevated to university status as part of the South African government’s restructuring of tertiary education.
Campuses and Faculties
CUT operates two main campuses:
Bloemfontein Campus
Situated in the judicial capital of South Africa, this campus offers a range of technological fields, including science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); management sciences; humanities; and education.
Welkom Campus
Located in the heart of the Free State goldfields, this campus provides education opportunities similar to those at the Bloemfontein Campus.
The university comprises four faculties:
- Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology
- Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences
- Faculty of Humanities
- Faculty of Management Sciences
These faculties offer a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas, postgraduate diplomas, master’s, and doctoral degrees.

Application Process
The application cycle for the 2025 academic year opened on 13 May 2024 and closed on 30 September 2024. Prospective students are encouraged to prepare necessary documents, such as final Grade 11 results or Grade 12 June results for current matriculants, and certified ID and National Senior Certificate for already matriculated applicants. Postgraduate applicants should engage with the relevant department heads before applying online.
