Bishops Diocesan College

Bishops Diocesan College is one of South Africa’s oldest and most prestigious schools – an independent Anglican day and boarding school for boys in Rondebosch, Cape Town. Founded on 2 October 1849 by Robert Gray, the first Anglican Bishop of Cape Town (and his wife Sophy Gray, who also founded its sister school, St Cyprian’s), “Bishops” has grown over more than 175 years into a renowned institution of around 1,350 boys across its Pre-Preparatory, Preparatory and College divisions, educating boys from roughly age 4 to 18.

The school combines a strong academic ethos with a deep commitment to all-round, holistic development, aiming to help every boy grow into a fulfilled and responsible man. Founded on the Anglican faith and driven by strong spiritual and moral ideals, it warmly welcomes boys of all faiths. In the senior years pupils write the IEB National Senior Certificate, with a Cambridge International AS and A-Level pathway also offered, and the College consistently produces excellent matric results.

Life at Bishops is organised around a historic house system – including the boarding houses Founders, School and White – that builds belonging, pastoral care and lifelong loyalty, supported by the worldwide Old Diocesan Union. The school is especially famed for its sporting heritage: its Rondebosch field, opened in 1866, was South Africa’s first dedicated rugby venue, and Bishops has produced dozens of Springboks alongside leaders across business, the arts and public life.
