Curro Hillcrest
Curro Hillcrest (Curro Hillcrest Christian Academy) is an independent, co-educational school in the leafy Durban suburb of Hillcrest, and part of the national Curro group. Spread across two neighbouring campuses off Inanda Road, it offers the Curro education from preschool (around age 2) through Grade R and the primary school to a high school running from Grade 8 to Grade 12. Teaching takes place in English, with Afrikaans and isiZulu offered as additional languages, and the school writes the IEB matric examination at the end of Grade 12.
Class sizes are deliberately capped at around 25 learners so each child receives personal attention, and the national CAPS curriculum is delivered through Curro’s signature project-based learning and self-discovery approach – encouraging research, experiments and real-world assignments that build critical-thinking and 21st-century skills rather than rote memorisation. Specialised subjects such as Robotics feature throughout, and the Curro Choice initiative gives learners access to a wider range of subjects through live online lessons, all culminating in the IEB examination.
Academics are balanced with a strong sporting and cultural programme. The school enjoys excellent facilities – including a world-class heated Olympic swimming pool with electronic timing that hosts the national Curro AquaElite Gala, and tennis courts that host the Curro Centre Court tournament – alongside aftercare and a school-transport service. Recent Grade 12 fees are around R134,000 a year; full fee and admissions details are available directly from the school.
