Durban Girls’ College (DGC) is a world-class independent Christian school for girls, set high on the Berea overlooking the city of Durban. Founded in 1877 as the “Durban Young Ladies’ Collegiate Institution” by six Durban Commissioners and Protestant clergy under the leadership of J F Churchill, it is one of South Africa’s oldest girls’ schools – its six houses still bear the founders’ names – and moved to its present Musgrave Road campus in 1905. Today it educates girls from Grade 00 to Grade 12, with weekly boarding available in the high school, and will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2027.

DGC follows the IEB curriculum and achieves consistently outstanding results – the Class of 2024 recorded a 100% pass rate and an average of 3.2 distinctions per pupil. It is also an internationally accredited “Thinking School,” recognised by the University of Exeter in the UK; this framework enriches the IEB curriculum by nurturing strong learning behaviours and encouraging girls to “think about their thinking.” Guided by its values of integrity, courage, agility, respect and empathy, the school aims to develop significant, confident young women prepared to thrive in a changing world.

Renowned for excellence across academics, culture and sport, DGC was ranked the number-one girls’ sports school in South Africa in 2024. Pupils enjoy world-class facilities on a spacious, historic campus that continues to grow – including a new Multi-Functional Indoor Centre due to open in 2027. Recent weekly boarding fees are around R139,400 a year; full fee and admissions details are available directly from the school.
