Highbury Preparatory School is an independent Christian preparatory day school for boys in the picturesque Durban suburb of Hillcrest, set on 11 hectares of park-like grounds in the KwaZulu-Natal Highway area. Founded in 1903 by Sibella Douglas McMillan and named after Highbury House School in England – established by her father, the Reverend Charles Duff – it is one of South Africa’s oldest independent primary schools. It educates more than 550 boys from Grade R to Grade 7, and also runs a co-educational pre-primary unit, the Weavers’ Nest, for the very youngest children from Grade 0000 to Grade 00.

True to its motto Jamais Arrière (“Never Behind”) and its founding belief that every boy carries the potential for excellence waiting to be unearthed, Highbury treats each boy as an individual and follows a “personal best” approach – taking time to understand the needs, interests, strengths and weaknesses unique to each child. A school of honour rooted in faith, respect and trust, it nurtures boys who are kind, curious and capable, helping them grow into intellectually curious and emotionally intelligent young people.

The school combines high academic standards with a vibrant programme of music, culture and sport, delivered by enthusiastic, expert staff who understand boys. Cherished traditions – such as boys sharing meals together in the Dining Hall, where they learn life skills and table manners – add to its warm, distinctive character. Full fee and admissions details are available directly from the school.
