Hilton College is one of South Africa’s oldest and most prestigious schools – an independent, full-boarding school for boys set on a magnificent 1,600-hectare estate in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, near the village of Hilton above Pietermaritzburg. Founded in 1872 by Gould Arthur Lucas and Reverend William Orde Newnham as a non-denominational Christian boys’ school, it follows the English public-school tradition and is, together with Michaelhouse, one of only two remaining full-boarding boys’ schools in the country, where all pupils live on campus. Around 500 to 600 boys in Grades 8 to 12 board in seven houses, each boy supported by a personal tutor and a bespoke academic plan.

The estate is extraordinary, incorporating a proclaimed nature reserve – home to giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and more than 300 bird species – that serves as the boys’ “backyard” for hiking, camping and outdoor adventure, alongside a world-class performance and wellness centre and a state-of-the-art music centre. In Grades 8 and 9 pupils follow a bespoke, cross-curricular programme, and from Grade 10 they choose between the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) and Cambridge International A-Level pathways, achieving consistently outstanding results, including a 100% matric pass rate in recent years.

Christian values, a strong house system and compulsory team sport across three seasons underpin a holistic education; the school has a proud sporting heritage, having produced eight Springbok rugby players. Bursaries and academic, music, sport and all-rounder scholarships support access. The most expensive school in South Africa, Hilton charges around R442,000 a year (Grade 12, inclusive of boarding); full fee and admissions details are available directly from the school.
