St Benedict School

St Benedict School is an independent, co-educational Catholic day school in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal, educating learners from Grade RRR through to Grade 12. It was founded on 22 January 1956 by the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood, who opened a tiny school in an old wood-and-iron house near Mariannhill with just 32 pupils. From those humble beginnings – and despite a fire that destroyed part of the primary school in 1971 – it has grown into a flourishing school of around 400 learners, adding a dedicated High School wing in 2008 and a swimming pool in 2009.

A proudly multiracial school that has long welcomed children from all walks of life, St Benedict aims to provide quality independent education at the most affordable cost possible, while challenging its pupils to become thoughtful, independent future leaders within a warm Catholic Christian environment. The school’s ethos is woven through the school day with full-school and grade masses, scripture classes and a strong culture of care and empathy, and it celebrates South Africa’s diversity and cultural heritage.

As a member of ISASA, St Benedict writes the IEB examinations in Matric. Small classes of around 20 allow for individual attention, and a broad curriculum spans languages, mathematics, the sciences, commerce and specialist subjects such as Visual and Dramatic Art, Information Technology and Engineering Graphics and Design, complemented by music, sport and a long-standing international exchange with a school in Germany.
