St George's Preparatory School
St George’s Preparatory School (“St George’s Prep”) is an independent, co-educational school in Park Drive, central Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), Eastern Cape. It was founded in 1936 by Raymond Hutchinson to prepare boys for senior schools in South Africa and abroad, opening with about 50 pupils. The Prep became co-educational in 1987, added a Pre-Preparatory in 2000 and a College in 2001, and today – as part of the Curro school group and the wider St George’s Schools family – educates around 420 children aged three to thirteen, from Grade 000 to Grade 7, across its Pre-Preparatory, Junior Preparatory and Senior Preparatory phases.
Rooted in Christian ethics and values but non-denominational, St George’s is known for its warmth, friendliness and strong sense of family, providing a caring environment that nurtures the whole child. Teaching takes place in English, with Afrikaans and isiXhosa offered as additional languages, and the school keeps classes small – no more than around 22 pupils – for individual attention. Its broad curriculum includes Music and Robotics throughout, the practical Singapore Maths programme, and qualified learning support for pupils who need it.
The school has a particularly strong tradition in the arts, with a dedicated music school, a state-of-the-art Arts and Media Centre and the opportunity to sit Trinity College London exams in music and drama, alongside a vibrant sporting programme spanning everything from judo and golf to hockey and rugby. Grade 7 pupils can even spend two weeks at an independent school in the UK. Full fee and admissions details are available directly from the school.
