St Nicholas Diocesan School
St Nicholas Diocesan School is an independent, Anglican, co-educational day and boarding school in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, offering affordable, English-medium private education from Grade RRR to Grade 12, with boarding available from Grade 6. The school has a meaningful history: it was founded at the initiative of Bishop Alfred Mkhize, Bishop Suffragan of Natal, who in 1984 approached the Diocese of Natal to establish a church school for black students. After the Diocesan Trustees purchased the former Wykeham School property in Loop Street, St Nicholas officially opened on 22 March 1990 with 150 learners and 12 staff, and has grown steadily ever since.
A member of ISASA and affiliated to the IEB, St Nicholas follows the CAPS curriculum and is proud to be “a small school with a big heart.” It aims to provide a secure, caring environment in which every child is given the opportunity to realise their potential, catering for the needs of the “whole child” – intellectual, emotional, physical, spiritual and cultural. It was also the first school in Pietermaritzburg to join the South African Extraordinary Schools Coalition.
At the heart of the school is its Christian faith, captured in its motto Deus Ducit (“God Leads”). Its Anglican ethos is nurtured through classroom devotions, regular chapel services led by local clergy, Bible-based assemblies and Eucharists. Alongside its academic programme, the school offers a full range of sporting and cultural activities within a warm, inclusive community. Full fee and admissions details are available directly from the school.
