The Japanese School of Johannesburg
The Japanese School of Johannesburg is a private Japanese international school in Emmarentia, Johannesburg, dedicated to educating the children of Japanese expatriate families living in South Africa. Established in 1966 by the South African Japanese community and sponsored by the Nippon Club of South Africa (founded in 1961 to support Japanese companies in Johannesburg), it is financially subsidised by the Government of Japan, while the land was provided by the South African government.
A co-educational day school, it follows Japan’s national curriculum (the MEXT “Courses of Study”), with instruction in Japanese, covering the elementary and junior-high phases through to the equivalent of Grade 9. The curriculum mirrors that of schools in Japan – Japanese language, mathematics, science, social studies, moral education, physical education, music and fine arts, with English also taught – so that pupils can reintegrate seamlessly into the Japanese school system when their families return home. The school operates on a three-term Japanese academic calendar.
Set on a green campus near Emmarentia Dam, the school provides ordinary and special-purpose classrooms (for science, music and art) and a gymnasium. As a specialised community school, enrolment is generally limited to children of Japanese nationals. Full fee and admissions details are available directly from the school.
