Thomas More College
Thomas More College is an independent, Christian-based co-educational day school in Kloof, near Durban, set on a beautiful 20-hectare campus within the Kloof Conservancy. It opened on 1 February 1962 with just 55 boys, founded by Robin Savory and Chris Hurley – with the support of Archbishop Denis Hurley – as a school run by Catholic laity, and named after Saint Thomas More. The school became co-educational in the mid-1970s and added a primary school in 1993, growing into KwaZulu-Natal’s largest co-educational independent school, with around 1,150 pupils from Grade 000 right through to Grade 12.
Guided by its motto Vincit Omnia Veritas (“Truth Conquers All Things”) and a strong Christian-based ethos in which family values are paramount, the college focuses on smaller, personal classes within a sizeable, well-resourced campus. Learning progresses through three stages – Foundation Phase, Primary School and High School – with pupils exposed to a wide range of subjects up to Grade 9 before specialising from Grade 10. Students write the IEB National Senior Certificate, which emphasises critical thinking and well-rounded development.
As a member of the global Round Square network, Thomas More weaves the Round Square IDEALS – internationalism, democracy, environment, adventure, leadership and service – into daily school life, preparing “Tomorrow’s Leaders Today” as champions for a positive future. It is also well known for its long-standing annual charity “Long Walk.” A rich co-curricular programme of sport, culture and service rounds out the experience. Full fee and admissions details are available directly from the school.
