Treverton College
Treverton College is an independent, inter-denominational Christian co-educational day and boarding school set on a magnificent 270-hectare estate in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands at Mooi River – one of the largest independent school campuses in South Africa, conveniently placed on the N3 about 90 minutes from Durban. Rooted in a Baptist heritage, the school traces its origins to a boys’ school opened by Peter Binns in 1939; after closing in 1961, it was re-established in 1964 with 51 pupils and grew to add a high school, becoming co-educational in 1978. Today, under the banner “Education is an Adventure,” Treverton offers 15 consecutive years of co-education from Grade 000 to Matric – plus a post-matric Gap Year – to day scholars and weekly or termly boarders of all faiths.
Treverton is passionately committed to two traditions: “to celebrate the individual” and “to pursue authentic Christianity,” with chapel services, pupil-led meetings and Bible education woven through school life. Pupils write the IEB National Senior Certificate and the College has enjoyed a 100% matric pass rate since 1995, with many top learners placing in the top 1% of IEB national results. Boarding life is run as a “home away from home” across seven houses with resident house parents.
The school is best known as a national pioneer in environmental and outdoor education – it convened the founding conference of the Environmental Education Association of Southern Africa in 1982, and its Wildlife Area, managed by pupils and staff, is home to zebra, blesbok and hartebeest. A formal Outdoor Pursuits programme, an Equestrian Centre, trail running, mountain biking, rock climbing and a full range of sport and cultural activities complete a richly adventurous education. Recent fees range from roughly R135,000 to R263,000 a year; full fee and admissions details are available directly from the school.
