The American International School of Johannesburg (AISJ) is a leading independent, co-educational, non-profit international school, founded in 1982 to provide an American-style and international education to expatriate and local families. It operates two campuses – a large main campus in Midrand (between Johannesburg and Pretoria, complete with an on-site wetlands reserve) and a campus in Pretoria – and educates students from Pre-K (age 3) through to Grade 12, following the Northern Hemisphere (August-start) calendar. Boarding is available for high-school students from Grade 8.

AISJ is an authorised International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, having offered the IB Diploma Programme for over 30 years and introducing the IB Primary Years Programme from 2025-26 as it moves toward becoming a full IB Continuum school. High-school students can graduate with the US High School Diploma and/or the IB Diploma, supported by Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Instruction is in English, with an inquiry-driven approach and a notable commitment to inclusion and neurodiversity through dedicated learning-support pathways.

A genuinely global community representing more than 70 nationalities, AISJ is accredited by the Middle States Association and builds its programme on four pillars: Academics, Athletics, the Arts and Service Learning. Student life is rich, spanning varsity sport, performing arts, Model United Nations, robotics, music and extensive service-learning.

The spacious campuses offer modern academic buildings, libraries, science laboratories, theatres, swimming pools, arts centres and sports fields. As a premium international school, fees are high – recently ranging from around R186,000 in the early years to well above R700,000 in Grades 11 and 12, with boarding charged in addition; full details are available from the school.
