Urban Academy
Urban Academy is an independent, co-educational private school established in 2012 to provide caring, accessible education in the heart of the city. Now one of Gqeberha’s larger independent schools, with over 1,100 learners from Grade R to Matric, it operates across two campuses – its main campus in Despatch and a City Campus at 272 Govan Mbeki Avenue in central Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), which caters for the Foundation Phase (Grades R–3) and the high school grades (Grades 8–12). The school is registered with the Department of Basic Education and accredited by Umalusi.
Founded on the need for a genuinely caring urban school, Urban Academy describes itself as more than just a school – a place where every learner is welcomed as part of the family and where staff care for pupils “as if they are their own.” It follows the national CAPS curriculum leading to the National Senior Certificate, and underpins its work with a strong Christian ethos captured in the motto “Everything in the Glory of God.”
A clear academic focus runs through the school, supported by extra classes, remedial help, cross-grade teaching and a structured merit-and-demerit system that rewards good results and a strong work ethic while instilling discipline and respect. Sport and cultural activities are offered primarily at the main Despatch campus, and the school works hard to help every learner reach his or her full potential. Full fee and admissions details are available directly from the school.
