Holy Rosary School
Holy Rosary School is an independent Catholic day school for girls in Edenvale, east of Johannesburg, educating girls from Grade 0 to Grade 12 alongside a co-educational pre-primary. Founded in 1940 by Bishop Shanahan and the Sisters of the Holy Rosary Order – beginning as a single building on the Hurly farm – it has more than 80 years of history and remains true to its founding values of “Empowering Women” and “Service to Community.”
Faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church while warmly welcoming girls of all cultures and religions, Holy Rosary offers a holistic education that develops each girl academically, spiritually, culturally and physically within a close, family-like community, with pastoral care running through every part of school life. Girls write the IEB National Senior Certificate, known for its high standard and strong preparation for university.
Sport is a real strength: swimming, hockey (with eight teams), netball (ten teams), tennis, athletics and cross-country, plus a notable rowing programme that competes at the Gauteng and South African Schools regattas. The cultural offering is equally rich – choir, marimba bands, orchestra, gospel group and djembe drumming, along with public speaking, debating and drama, including the internationally recognised Trinity College London examinations.
A well-established outreach programme – through the Grade 6 and 7 “Shanahan Co-Workers” and the parent “Angel Network” – supports charities and the local community. The school is located at 113 Horwood Street, Edenvale, and details on fees and admissions are available directly from the school.
