Michael Oak Waldorf School is a co-educational, independent Waldorf (Steiner) school in the leafy southern suburb of Kenilworth, Cape Town. Founded in 1962 – when parents bought a single house at auction to create the first classroom for 15 pupils – it has grown into a well-established community of around 400 students, offering a full Waldorf journey from Playgroup through Kindergarten and Primary School to Matric on its tranquil one-hectare neighbourhood campus. It is one of 16 Waldorf schools in South Africa and part of a global network of more than 1,000.

Founded on the holistic pedagogy of Rudolf Steiner, the school seeks to “awaken the whole child” – developing intellectual, artistic, practical and social capacities in equal measure to nurture confident, balanced and responsible individuals. Teaching is built around the developmental needs of the growing child rather than a dictated syllabus, using rich “Main Lessons,” storytelling, handwork, eurythmy and the arts. In the high school, the Waldorf approach is carried through to a full, uncompromised Grade 12: the curriculum covers all the requirements of the South African syllabus and keeps abreast of the National Senior Certificate, while adding depth, project work and creative presentation that demand independence and original thinking – culminating in the celebrated Grade 12 play and individual projects.

A registered non-profit trust, Michael Oak offers a limited financial-assistance scheme and a warm, parent-supported community rooted in nature-based learning. Full fee and admissions details are available directly from the school.
