St Andrew's Preparatory School
St Andrew’s Preparatory School (“Prep”) is a private, co-educational boarding and day school with an Anglican foundation in Makhanda (Grahamstown), Eastern Cape. Founded in 1885, it forms part of Makhanda’s historic “family of schools” alongside its brother school, St Andrew’s College (1855), and sister school, the Diocesan School for Girls (1874) – a cluster of independent schools set beside Rhodes University that gives the little city a unique educational character. Prep educates boys and girls together from pre-primary (Grade 0000, the “Little Blues”) through to Grade 3; from Grade 4 the girls move on to DSG, and the school continues with boys from Grade 4 to Grade 7, who in turn feed into St Andrew’s College.
Since 1885, Prep has nurtured an ethos of caring, fairness, honesty and loyalty, in a warm Christian environment where, in its own words, “learning and fun are one.” It is committed to the careful development of each child’s intellectual growth, creative expression, sporting accomplishment and ethical character, so that every pupil can reach his or her full potential.
In small classes, pupils tackle a broad primary curriculum with a strong emphasis on mathematics and language skills – including the study of three languages – and a sound grounding in information and communications technology from the junior years. Excellent full-time boarding, a rich sporting and cultural programme, and easy access to Makhanda’s renowned National Arts and Science Festivals round out the experience. Notable alumni include actors Sharlto Copley and Ian Roberts. Full fee and admissions details are available directly from the school.
