St Benedict's College
St Benedict’s College (“Bennies”) is a leading independent Catholic day and boarding school for boys, set on a 40-acre estate in the leafy suburb of Bedfordview, on Johannesburg’s East Rand. Founded in 1958 by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, it is the largest Catholic school in South Africa, educating around 1,400 boys from Grade R to Grade 12 across a Junior Preparatory, Preparatory and College, with boarding offered from Grade 8.
Guided by its motto Veritas in Caritate (“Truth through caring”) and the call to be a “Light in the World,” St Benedict’s offers a holistic, gospel-based education built on four cornerstones – academics, religion, sport and culture – within a disciplined, diverse and inclusive community that welcomes families regardless of background or faith. Its boy-centred “integrated day” weaves academics and co-curricular activities together.
Academically the school is one of the country’s strongest, writing the IEB National Senior Certificate with a 100% matric pass rate maintained since 1974 and university-entrance rates above 95%, making it a top feeder to the University of the Witwatersrand. Sport is a great strength – the school competes keenly with the likes of St John’s, St Stithians and Pretoria Boys’ High – offering rugby, cricket, hockey, rowing, water polo, swimming (a notable strength), athletics, basketball, soccer, tennis and cross-country, alongside a rich cultural programme.
Facilities are world-class, complemented by a comfortable boarding house (Bishop Grandin House) and additional campuses at Linbro Park and Magaliesburg. The school is known for offering excellent value for money; full fee and admissions details are available from the school.
